Protect Your Kitchen From Super Bowl Party Damage

February 3, 2012

Are you hosting a Super Bowl party this weekend? Don’t let your house guests ruin your kitchen! The kitchen sink is usually more abused than a shower or bathtub. Try these party tips to avoid damaging your kitchen sink or counters during your party.

  • Use a liner. When dishes are dropped into your sink, they could scrape, dent, or chip the finish of a porcelain sink. Placing a thin liner in the sink will help protect it from scratches. However, be careful that your liner doesn’t contain powerful adhesives that could peel off or corrode your finish.
  • Wipe it down. Specifically during the Super Bowl, Buffalo wings, dip, and soda can become very messy. Grease and food can stain the inner surface of your sink or get stuck between crevices of your tile countertop. Wipe off your surfaces regularly to keep them clean and prevent drips and spots from hardening.
  • Use the remote. Since you don’t want to miss any touchdowns, you or your house guests might rush around during the commercials to get food or go to the restroom. In the hurry, food and drinks will spill on the counter or floor, possibly ruining the surface. Consider pausing the game for a brief moment so everybody can get what they need in a relaxed and careful manner.

His and Her Sinks Can Prevent Bathroom Destruction

January 27, 2012

It gets a little crowded around your small bathroom sink. You have just a small space to lay out all your personal care and hygiene products. However, double sinks, also known as “his and her” sinks, can save space, time, and even help protect the finish of your countertops and sinks.

Double vanities will give you more space to spread out your materials and keep them separate. You won’t have to fumble through all the products or leave your countertop cluttered and messy. As you dig through your sink area in your morning rush, you’ll likely knock over bottles and spill hair products, facial moisturizers, or cleansers. These products may be too abrasive for your tile, leaving stains and erosion. When your areas are separate, you can sort out your products to find exactly what you need in an organized, timely, and clean manner.

Give Outdated Fixtures a Facelift

May 18, 2011

In the 1970’s, olive green or orange appliances were stylish in home décor. Unfortunately for people who purchased a 1970’s home, it is no longer the style of choice. Homeowners now find white, stone and neutral shades more appealing.

Sinks, bathtubs, and countertops can be refinished in an affordable way to give your bathroom and/or kitchen a face-lift.  Below are great before and after pictures of a recent bathroom sink facelift.

DIY Porcelain Chip Kits

April 6, 2011

In hard economic times, people search for cheap ways to repair and update their homes. Home owners with porcelain tubs and sinks often purchase do-it-yourself (DIY) chip repair kits. While this seems to be the most cost effective way to repair a chip, it can actually wind up costing you more.

These DIY chip repair kits cost around $25 and claim to take as little as five minutes to dry. Manufacturers state that the tub or sink can be used in less than an hour. They also claim that their products are water-proof and resistant to household cleaners. Also, there are websites that give you step-by-step guide for the repairs. However, my clients who’ve tried the DIY chip repair kits complain of a poor appearance, as well as chipping and peeling.

I’m Chris Duty, owner of Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing, and I have been getting a lot of calls lately to repair these DIY chip repairs! I have been refinishing bathtubs, sinks, and showers for years. I have seen and repaired a number of DIY chip repair projects. I will save you money and hours of aggravation with custom porcelain refinishing.

Here are some before and after pictures of a sink remodel I recently completed. This is not a little DIY project!

Refinishing the Tub is Not a Do-It-Yourself Project

March 10, 2011

With spring approaching quickly, homeowners are ready to spring clean and fix up the house. Many people will watch home improvement programs and think they can handle everything themselves. Some decide to take on the bathroom and give it a whole new look. There are several ways to spruce up the bathroom and increase the value of your home, but not all are do-it-yourself projects.

Let’s look at your bathtub. You can go to any home improvement store and purchase a new bathtub for around $200. With that, you need to add in the cost of demolition, removal, tile replacement, and plumbing. Suddenly your $200 bathtub just cost you plenty more … even thousands!

You have probably seen advertisements for acrylic liners. These bandages are actually more expensive than a new tub, and they only hide the real problems.  You could purchase a DIY refinisher and attempt to repair the tub yourself.  Without experience, it is virtually impossible to achieve a smooth finish. Not to mention, most DIY finishes peel and chip. So what other options do you have?

I’m Chris Duty, owner and operator of Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing, and I have been refinishing bathtubs, sinks, and showers for years.  I have saved my customers hours of aggravation and money with my custom refinishing. Upon completion of your refinished project, I will give you instructions for the care of your new refinished bathtub.

I not only do refinishing work on tubs, sinks, and counter tops, I do remodeling projects such as tile, painting, flooring, and have a crew of trustworthy plumbers and electricians. We can take that DIY project off your hands or fix that project so you can enjoy your weekend.

If you are in the DFW area and need bathtub refinishing or minor remodeling, call me at (940)395-1406 for a free estimate.  I will provide you with professional references upon request.

Sink Refinishing and Restoration in Dallas Fort Worth

December 8, 2010

This double sink is being used in a kitchen remodel. My client hoped that it could be restored to its original condition instead of having to use a modern sink. As you can see, the sink had significant damage and required repair as well as restoration. As usual, both the client and I were pleased with the finished product.

I always tell my clients that the kitchen sink is more abused than a shower or bathtub. If you have a porcelain or refinished sink, it can chip when pots, pans, glassware, silverware, or dishes are dropped into it. Unless the sink is unique to your décor, antique, or is set under tile, I usually recommend replacing it with a new model. Kitchen sinks can be refinished, and they look great afterward. But practicality dictates that a homeowner should weigh the pros and cons before refinishing.

Do you have a sink, shower, or bathtub that needs restoration? Call me, Chris, at 940-395-1406 or email me for a free estimate. Happy holidays!
