Protecting Kitchen Sinks and Countertops

April 27, 2012

Your kitchen sinks and countertops are very vulnerable to damage caused by sharp knives, hot grease, and sticky foods. If you’ve damaged your kitchen, Striking Image can repair, refinish, or replace your surfaces to keep them smooth and shiny.

Restoring Surface Burns

Hot pots and pans, crockpots, toaster ovens, waffle irons, and other kitchen appliances generate extreme heat. Placing hot items directly on your counter may burn or melt your surface. To avoid leaving black burn marks on your counter slab, use a trivet to prevent direct contact between your countertop and the hot appliance. If you’ve spilled boiling water on your countertop, wipe it up immediately to prevent the heat from settling into your surface.

Protect Your Kitchen From Super Bowl Party Damage

February 3, 2012

Are you hosting a Super Bowl party this weekend? Don’t let your house guests ruin your kitchen! The kitchen sink is usually more abused than a shower or bathtub. Try these party tips to avoid damaging your kitchen sink or counters during your party.

  • Use a liner. When dishes are dropped into your sink, they could scrape, dent, or chip the finish of a porcelain sink. Placing a thin liner in the sink will help protect it from scratches. However, be careful that your liner doesn’t contain powerful adhesives that could peel off or corrode your finish.
  • Wipe it down. Specifically during the Super Bowl, Buffalo wings, dip, and soda can become very messy. Grease and food can stain the inner surface of your sink or get stuck between crevices of your tile countertop. Wipe off your surfaces regularly to keep them clean and prevent drips and spots from hardening.
  • Use the remote. Since you don’t want to miss any touchdowns, you or your house guests might rush around during the commercials to get food or go to the restroom. In the hurry, food and drinks will spill on the counter or floor, possibly ruining the surface. Consider pausing the game for a brief moment so everybody can get what they need in a relaxed and careful manner.

Protect Your Belongings During Refinishing

April 13, 2011

As with any home improvement project, prep work is necessary to ensure your belongings aren’t harmed. I’m Chris Duty of Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing, and I recommend that my clients remove all personal belongings from the room in which a fixture is being refinished.

While I am refinishing your tub, sink or countertops, I will open windows and use filtered fans to help eliminate the odor from the process. I will line the walls, cabinets, and floors with a static paper that attracts overspray. The filtered fans also draw out overspray. These methods work, so not only will you have a beautifully restored fixture, you won’t even know that I was there.

I advise my clients that a refinished surface need to 48 hours to fully harden.

Upon completion of the project, I will give you instructions for care and cleaning of your refinished sink, tub, or countertop. By following my instructions and avoiding abrasive cleaners, you can enjoy your refinished surface for 10 to 20 years or longer. Refinished surfaces, like porcelain, can chip if you drop something heavy on them, but I also offer chip repair services. Read the rest of this entry ?

Affordable Bathroom & Kitchen Refurbishing & Remodeling

January 11, 2011

Your bathroom and kitchen are the most highly trafficked areas of your home, but any realtor will tell you, they’re  the first places potential buyers look. Everyone loves a sparkling kitchen and bathroom. If you’re considering selling your home, or, if like many homeowners, you want to fix up your home and enjoy it until economy picks up, consider affordable refurbishing or remodeling.

One way to save money on remodeling is to invest in porcelain refinishing for counter tops, tile walls, appliances, showers, bathtubs, and sinks. Refinishing these surfaces means that you won’t have to rip out and replace them. Instead, they’ll have a beautiful, new look that could last for years to come.

And porcelain refinishing is not limited to white. Not at all! You can choose virtually any color, or you can opt for a stone look finish with Multi-Spec.

I’m Chris Duty, and I’ve been in the refinishing business (first as an apprentice, then in my own company, Striking Image) for nearly two decades. In addition, I offer other services, like removal or construction of walls, tiling, flooring, texture and paint, plumbing, and more. What I can’t do, I have reputable crews to handle. My general contracting and bathroom remodeling clients are always pleased with the results – and the price.

If your bathroom or kitchen could use some work, call me, Chris, at 940-395-1406, or email strikingimage@gmail.com for a free estimate. I serve clients in Southlake, Grapevine, Roanoke, Lewisville, Colleyville, Keller, and surrounding communities, and references are available.

Sink Refinishing and Restoration in Dallas Fort Worth

December 8, 2010

This double sink is being used in a kitchen remodel. My client hoped that it could be restored to its original condition instead of having to use a modern sink. As you can see, the sink had significant damage and required repair as well as restoration. As usual, both the client and I were pleased with the finished product.

I always tell my clients that the kitchen sink is more abused than a shower or bathtub. If you have a porcelain or refinished sink, it can chip when pots, pans, glassware, silverware, or dishes are dropped into it. Unless the sink is unique to your décor, antique, or is set under tile, I usually recommend replacing it with a new model. Kitchen sinks can be refinished, and they look great afterward. But practicality dictates that a homeowner should weigh the pros and cons before refinishing.

Do you have a sink, shower, or bathtub that needs restoration? Call me, Chris, at 940-395-1406 or email me for a free estimate. Happy holidays!

Sink and Bathtub Refinishing in Dallas – Fort Worth

November 16, 2010

Hi there! Just wanted to share a few photos of my recent jobs with you. This first set of photos represents chip repair on a kitchen sink. I don’t often recommend refinishing a kitchen sink because, with daily use, it will likely chip. However, if you’re selling your home or have a rental property, refinishing may be a good solution. You can see here that chip repair made the sink look almost as good as new.

In these photos, you see a bathtub I refinished. Years of wear and tear, cleaning, and use had made the tub’s surface dingy and stained. Porcelain, like our teeth, is porous. It soaks up stains. So, naturally, over time, porcelain discolors. However, after porcelain refinishing, the bathtub looks clean and new. I provide all my clients with cleaning and care instructions that will prolong the life of a newly refinished surface. The process I use is very durable. It can last 10 or 20  years, but, like porcelain, it’s susceptible to chipping and staining over time. A refinished bathtub can be stripped with chemicals, then refinished again when it begins to show wear.

Bathroom Remodeling in Grapevine, Southlake, Keller, Tx

November 5, 2010

It’s hard to sell a home right now. The economy is down, and so are house sales. My in-laws recently had their house on the market for six months, with no luck. They’ve decided to stay in the home and remodel. It’s actually a great idea. If you’ve not had luck selling your home, or if you plan to stay put for a few more years, consider freshening it up a bit. Bathrooms and kitchens usually get the most wear and tear, and remodeling these two areas will only add value to your home.

I’m Chris Duty of Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing, and I’ve been refinishing bathtubs and remodeling bathrooms for years. I understand the importance of staying within a budget — and I also value word of mouth advertising, so I guarantee my work.

In addition to resurfacing bathtubs, sinks, counter tops, and tile, I have a crew of flooring professionals, painters (who are great at faux finishes), plumbers, and electricians. We can take care of virtually any problem you have with your bathroom or kitchen, then update and enhance the esthetics. You’ll end up with a beautiful, modern bathroom or to enjoy for years to come!

Call me, Chris Duty, at 940-395-1406 today to schedule a free estimate.

1985 Red to 2010 White in Fort Worth

October 21, 2010

As a porcelain refinisher, I make old bathtubs look new. Sometimes the tubs are really, really old. I think the oldest one I’ve done was a cast iron tub from right about the turn of the century… 1908 maybe. But I can refinish more than bathtubs. In this photo, you can see that tile refinishing can update a kitchen dramatically. In the 80s, red tile with wood cabinets was cool. Now, though, a cleaner, sleeker look is trendy. This particular client, whose home was in Fort Worth, saved thousands of dollars by having me refinish their red tile counter tops with a white, shiny surface. (I can do a stone look finish, as well.)

These tiles were in the kitchen, but I also refinish wall tile in showers and around bathtubs. I’ve even changed the color of old avocado green and harvest gold appliances (c. 1970s) to white or a variation of white, like almond, to match modern appliances.

If you’re amping up to refurbish your bathroom or kitchen, and you’re planning on replacing tile, tubs, sinks, or appliances (that work), shoot me an email with a photo . Include your phone number, and I’ll call you to discuss whether refinishing is a cost-effective alternative to replacement. Or, if you prefer call me at 940-395-1406 or submit my online email request form.
