Chipped Bathtubs and Sinks? No Problem.

September 26, 2011

In addition to completely refinishing bathtubs, sinks, showers, and appliances, Striking Image offers chip repair and professional buffing. Bathrooms and kitchens are often the first thing people notice when they visit a home, and they’re also important factors in selling a home. These rooms, however, are the two areas of a home that tend to get the most wear and tear. Commonly, Chris is called in to repair chips, stains, cracks, scratches, or other small imperfections in new or used homes, apartments, and hotels.

Causes of these problems include:

  • Years of children’s toys in the bathtub
  • Dropping tools in the tub or sink
  • Washing pets (their nails scratch the surface) in the bathtub
  • Spilling a chemical or nail polish on a surface
  • Cigarette burns on sinks
  • Dropping pots, pans, and utensils in the kitchen sink

With an airbrush, special paint, a professional buffer, and chemicals, Chris can repair small imperfections such as these to leave your surface looking as good as new.

If you have a chip in need of repair, call Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing today at 940-395-1406. Chris serves homeowners and businesses in the Dallas – Ft. Worth Area, including Southlake, Grapevine, Keller, Lewisville, and Denton.

Porcelain Perfectionism

August 4, 2011

With all the shows now about refurbishing, restoring, and remodeling, we’re waiting for our phone to ring. The day that a television show producer decides to green arrow a project like Flip that Porcelain, or Porcelain Hunters, or even Pimp My Porcelain, Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing will be who he calls. Based in Roanoke, Texas, we provide the DFW metroplex with porcelain rehabilitation.

We can’t help you with ghosts, because we’re not ghostbusters. However, we can help with the damage control if your malicious ghost tore up the beautiful porcelain in the bathroom. We just hope for your sake that you weren’t using the bathroom at the time.

Now perhaps your only ghost is the ghost of an antique sink or tub that currently is only partial remnants of its original beauty. Without changing any of your antique’s best and beginning integrity, we reincarnate your porcelain piece to a good-as-new condition. Whether you purchased your item at a garage sale in a steal of a deal, or you just need some repairs on your modern bathroom essentials, Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing will awaken the prestige of your porcelain.

DIY Porcelain Chip Kits

April 6, 2011

In hard economic times, people search for cheap ways to repair and update their homes. Home owners with porcelain tubs and sinks often purchase do-it-yourself (DIY) chip repair kits. While this seems to be the most cost effective way to repair a chip, it can actually wind up costing you more.

These DIY chip repair kits cost around $25 and claim to take as little as five minutes to dry. Manufacturers state that the tub or sink can be used in less than an hour. They also claim that their products are water-proof and resistant to household cleaners. Also, there are websites that give you step-by-step guide for the repairs. However, my clients who’ve tried the DIY chip repair kits complain of a poor appearance, as well as chipping and peeling.

I’m Chris Duty, owner of Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing, and I have been getting a lot of calls lately to repair these DIY chip repairs! I have been refinishing bathtubs, sinks, and showers for years. I have seen and repaired a number of DIY chip repair projects. I will save you money and hours of aggravation with custom porcelain refinishing.

Here are some before and after pictures of a sink remodel I recently completed. This is not a little DIY project!

Save yourself some time, energy, and money, and call me at (940)395-1406 for a free estimate.

I not only do refinishing work on tubs, sinks, and counter tops, I do remodeling projects such as tile, painting, flooring, and I have a crew of trustworthy plumbers and electricians. We can take that DIY project off your hands, so you can enjoy your weekend.

Refinishing the Tub is Not a Do-It-Yourself Project

March 10, 2011

With spring approaching quickly, homeowners are ready to spring clean and fix up the house. Many people will watch home improvement programs and think they can handle everything themselves. Some decide to take on the bathroom and give it a whole new look. There are several ways to spruce up the bathroom and increase the value of your home, but not all are do-it-yourself projects.

Let’s look at your bathtub. You can go to any home improvement store and purchase a new bathtub for around $200. With that, you need to add in the cost of demolition, removal, tile replacement, and plumbing. Suddenly your $200 bathtub just cost you plenty more … even thousands!

You have probably seen advertisements for acrylic liners. These bandages are actually more expensive than a new tub, and they only hide the real problems.  You could purchase a DIY refinisher and attempt to repair the tub yourself.  Without experience, it is virtually impossible to achieve a smooth finish. Not to mention, most DIY finishes peel and chip. So what other options do you have?

I’m Chris Duty, owner and operator of Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing, and I have been refinishing bathtubs, sinks, and showers for years.  I have saved my customers hours of aggravation and money with my custom refinishing. Upon completion of your refinished project, I will give you instructions for the care of your new refinished bathtub.

I not only do refinishing work on tubs, sinks, and counter tops, I do remodeling projects such as tile, painting, flooring, and have a crew of trustworthy plumbers and electricians. We can take that DIY project off your hands or fix that project so you can enjoy your weekend.

If you are in the DFW area and need bathtub refinishing or minor remodeling, call me at (940)395-1406 for a free estimate.  I will provide you with professional references upon request.

Dallas Fort Worth Bathtub Repair

November 30, 2010

Builders, realtors, and home remodelers call on me all the time for bathtub repair. If your bathtub (or sink, shower, counter top, appliance) has chips, scratches, stains, burns, or cracks, you can save yourself time and money by calling on Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing. I’m Chris Duty, owner of Striking Image, and I want to help you understand what porcelain refinishing and chip repair can do for you. Here are some common questions that I get asked.

“Do bathtub repairs look good?”

Better than new in most cases. In fact, I work for many high-end custom home builders in the DFW metroplex. In a new home, bathtubs are installed early during the construction process because they must be tested, over time, for leaks. If a tub does leak, the builder wants to find it before carpet, tile, and sheet rock are installed. However, because bathtubs (and shower pans) are in a house throughout the construction process, they take a serious beating. Everyone from carpenters to tile and carpet installers throw debris into the tub for months. Then, once the tub is cleaned out, the plumber and painters usually step all over it with gritty, grimy workboots. They drop tools, bricks, and just about everything else in the tub. As you can imagine, that new tub no longer looks new by the time the homeowners are ready for a walk through. That’s when builders call on me. Porcelain refinishing and chip repair is an accepted and respected alternative to replacing a bathtub — even in a brand new home! So yes, the results look sensational.

“Is it smelly and messy?”

Chip repair is quick and easy. It takes me less than one hour in most cases. Refinishing a sink, bathtub, counter, or shower takes longer — a few hours. The two-component polyurethane process I use is sprayed onto a surface that’s been prepared with etching acid. There is some odor, but I open windows and use fans to reduce the smell. Don’t worry about paint overspray. I line the walls and floors with a static paper that attracts overspray, and I put filters on my fans to draw in overspray. These precautionary measures work. You’ll have a beautifully refinished tub, and you won’t even notice that I was ever there.

“How long will I be without my bathtub?”

I recommend that, if your home is occupied, you leave one working bathroom available. For instance, if you have two full baths and you want both tubs refinished, I’ll do one, then a few days later, I’ll do the next. A refinished surface needs 48 hours to fully cure (harden).

“Will a refinished bathtub last very long?”

It is my experience that people who follow my care instructions and do not use abrasive cleansers can enjoy their refinished tub for 10 or 20 years. Like porcelain, a refinished surface can chip if you drop something heavy on it. Also like porcelain, the surface can wear down and discolor if you use harsh, abrasive cleansers. My care instructions recommend products like Soft Scrub that do not etch a tub’s surface. Caring for a refinished tub is easy, and just like everything else in life, if you take care of it, it will last longer.

Striking Image Porcelain Refinishing has had a stellar reputation in the Dallas, Fort Worth, Denton area for nearly a decade. Located in Roanoke, I serve homeowners, realtors, interior designers, and builders in Southlake, Grapevine, Hurst, Euless, Bedford, and surrounding communities. My work comes with a limited warranty, as well, and I’ll be happy to provide professional references upon request. Call me, Chris, at 940-395-1406, or email me, today for a free estimate.

Sink and Bathtub Refinishing in Dallas – Fort Worth

November 16, 2010

Hi there! Just wanted to share a few photos of my recent jobs with you. This first set of photos represents chip repair on a kitchen sink. I don’t often recommend refinishing a kitchen sink because, with daily use, it will likely chip. However, if you’re selling your home or have a rental property, refinishing may be a good solution. You can see here that chip repair made the sink look almost as good as new.

In these photos, you see a bathtub I refinished. Years of wear and tear, cleaning, and use had made the tub’s surface dingy and stained. Porcelain, like our teeth, is porous. It soaks up stains. So, naturally, over time, porcelain discolors. However, after porcelain refinishing, the bathtub looks clean and new. I provide all my clients with cleaning and care instructions that will prolong the life of a newly refinished surface. The process I use is very durable. It can last 10 or 20  years, but, like porcelain, it’s susceptible to chipping and staining over time. A refinished bathtub can be stripped with chemicals, then refinished again when it begins to show wear.

Bathtub Repair: Chips and Buffing

November 9, 2010

You dropped a wrench in your bathtub; you bathed your dogs in the tub and their nails scratched up the bottom; years of use have made your bathtub dull and unattractive. Maybe you need refinishing, or maybe your tub just needs chip repair or an industrial buffing to bring back the shine.

If your tub is chipped above the waterline – like on the saddle or outside – a chip repair can be very effective. I use custom-tinted process, bonding compound, and an air brush for a blended, nearly perfect match. Most people can’t even find where the chip was, once I’m finished.

In the case of scratches or burns, I can often use an industrial buffing compound and high-powered buffer to bring back a nice luster to a bathtub’s surface.

Now, if you have a chip below the water line, a chip repair won’t last. I can put one on for you, but it will not come with any guarantee because the tub should be refinished. Above the waterline, I’ll include a warranty. If a tub’s scratches and burns are too deep to buff out, we’ll have to look at bathtub refinishing. Call me for a bid if you live in the Dallas – Fort Worth metroplex. I’m Chris, and you can reach me at 940-395-1406 any time.

Rebuilding a Bathtub Overflow: Bedford, Texas

May 20, 2010

In this project, Chris completely restored a tub with significant rust and damage around the overflow drain. You don’t always have to replace a tub with a damaged drain. Using the durable materials common in auto repair, your bathtub can be repaired and restored to look better than new. This home, in Bedford, Texas, had extensive damage – but not to the point that the homeowner had to replace the tub. Chris repaired the rusted drain, then refinished the bathtub, and now, as you can see, it’s better than ever!
