Give a Tiny Bathroom Large Appeal with Striking Image Remodeling
May 25, 2011
With the costs associated with owning and maintaining a house, it only makes sense that you want to get the most bang for your buck.
Guest, also known as half, bathrooms are common fixtures in many homes. For some, these small bathrooms, usually consisting of a toilet, sink, and sometimes a shower, offer convenient privacy for visitors and longer-term guests. For other families, however, these small bathrooms serve as the main bathroom in addition to the master bath.
If this is the case, it’s likely that you want to maximize your space and make your half bathroom seem larger. Follow these tips to make a small bathroom look bigger without the need of a sledgehammer.
Do your research.
Start your remodeling process by looking through magazines and on the Internet for designs you find appealing. Examine any picture that catches your eye, and determine which element gives you the first feeling of spaciousness. It may be the paint color on the walls, the decorations, or the placement or presence of mirrors, which can create an illusion of more space.
Consider light-colored flooring and various storage options.
You will probably notice that most of the pictures have light-colored flooring. This will make the bathroom look larger. Having a lot of cabinets and shelving, on the other hand, might make the bathroom look smaller. While these storage options may be convenient, they may give you the feeling of a closet rather than expanded space. Decide what absolutely needs to be in the bathroom and stick to it. Consider building triangular shelves in one corner of the bathroom and be very organized and purposeful about what you place on those shelves.
Have a cohesive theme.
To help create a more spacious feel, stick to a cohesive theme, but don’t overdo it. A good way to establish a theme is to upgrade outdated fixtures for more modern styles. In the 1970s, for example, olive green and orange appliances were stylish in home décor, but white, silver, stone, and neutral shades are more appealing today.
Keep these things in mind.
A painting or photograph should give you a feeling of space. Pictures that take you somewhere, like towards the horizon, down a river, or into the woods will make the bathroom feel larger. Flat pictures create a busy, cluttered feel. Pay attention to the lighting of the room, as well. Avoid using one overhead light. Instead, try to incorporate some well-placed sconces and track lighting to make the room appear larger and feel warmer.
